What to license?

In 2018 California we'll have to buy caliber specific licenses to buy ammo in State. One license for each caliber, at the cost (last estimate I hear) of $50 per. I don't know how long the licenses will be good for---maybe 10 years, maybe 5 years, maybe 1 year.

I shoot many different calibers, but I hand load so I'm not in as bad of shape as many here will be ten months from now.

I'll definitely apply for a license for .22LRs.
Maybe .45ACP since I often lose brass in tall grass at the range. Range ammo like WWB, Magtech, UMC and PMC are good sources for replenishing my stash. Without a .45ACP license that's not going to happen.
I'm thinking 12 gauge too. I have a MEC press but often it just isn't feasible cost wise to reload target loads, but of course who knows what the future holds?

So I'm mulling this stupid requirement over and thought I'd ask here for some suggestions---
What about hunting loads?
What about defensive loads?

I read the law and did not get the impression you needed a license for each caliber. My understanding (???) is one license allows ammo purchases but every box of ammo gets registered at purchase time. I did not see that it was caliber specific as suggested. But the CA DOJ always interprets gun laws in the worst way for us and often does not follow the law with their regulations that are suppose to be based on the law passed by the legislature.

I only hope I am right as I have 30 different caliber guns. But actually I reload for 99% of them and nothing in the law seems to cover reloading for yourself (???).

Please correct me if I am wrong.

o_O A liscense to buy ammo? And it's "registered" at the time of purchase? WTH....

So are you suppose to call them and tell them, "Hey, I just used a box of 45acp", or do you have to prove you've used it? When does it become "UN-registered"?

Restrict or make illegal, there will be a black market, it's just how things work. And I'm not afraid to say I'd be shopping that market. There will be plenty of ammo runners;).

To add to the stupidity only registered dealers can sell the ammo. NO ammo can be bought via the internet or brought into California without going through a registered dealer. Every cartridge sold in CA will be known to the CA DOJ.

Nevada and Arizona are a few hours away. How much of their ammo will get smuggled into CA by average Joe's? The law is stupid and does nothing to control gun crime but may make criminals out of law abiding people. What it does do is make gun ownership so onerous that there will be fewer new gun owners when they realize ammo is so hard to get. And that is there exact plan....fewer guns and gun owners.

My guess would be a fair sum. There's going to be a lot of money to be made by some enterprising individuals that live in Nevada and Arizona.;)

Make no mistake, there will be a black market, and someone will get rich from it. I just wished I lived in Arizona or Nevada. Let's see, a markup of 5 cents per round of rimfire, 15 to 25 cents per round of centerfire, depending on cartridge. 500lbs of cartridges per run, yup, someone's going to bank, and it will sell.

Oh, it'll be illegal to do that??? So are their retarded so called laws:rolleyes:.

Knowing exactly how the new law will be interpreted would require a mind reading act, but this is what I've surmised.
One can buy all the new ammo one wants, right now, from out of state but this door closes in 10 months. There is nothing (so far) restricting reloading components.

Realistically I don't see how this law is going to be enforced. We're a long skinny State bordering Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona. Illegal ammunition is an easy day trip away for most of us, and what of out of state hunters and match shooters bringing in their own personal ammo?

A license for buying AMMO?? I think that they want you guys to have to go back to black powder muzzle loaders, limited one per household. o_O

Seriously though, that's messed up. Personally, I'd probably stock up on some stuff I use often (more so 22lr) then buy quite a few reloading components! If they start making you have to have a license to buy ammo, its only a matter of time before they start doing other stuff..

Before I escaped CA, the City of LA required an ID and signature for handgun ammo sales. Thank the Lord above I was able to flee CA and get away from it's crazy politics. (not a coward, I joined a couple organizations, helped circulate petitions, spoke openly pro-gun, and voted. But the state is run by the "big three", Los Angeles, San Francisco (bay area), and Sacramento. Rural or small town and normal folk sportsmen are vastly outnumbered by the urban liberal voters)

Hmmm. I guess I can do a bit of side business transporting ammo across the line down to CA, just for old friends and acquaintances. I'll prolly need to change the plates on my truck to CA

We had a Field & Stream build a new store here back during the ammo crunch (right after Sandy Hoax). They had everything during the grand opening so I had one of those hand baskets loaded up with various ammo, so did several other folks.

After shopping I headed to the checkout. She rang up my ammo, then asked for an IDo_O. Being that I have a full beard and even look old there was no way she was mistaken me for someone under 18. I asked her why she needed my ID? She said it was store policy to run my ID (through one of those credit card swiper machines) that'll check instantly to see if I was legal to purchase ammo.

There was two other guys behind me with a good bit of ammo also. I noticed they were listening to the conversation intently. I asked the little lady at the checkout if she realizes we're in Ohio and Ohio requires no "check" of that manor to purchase ammo. She understood and said it was store policy.

I didn't get upset, I just told her that she might want to discuss with management about changing their policy to reflect State law. I told her I didn't want any of it, left the whole basket with her and the two guys behind me left theirs with her and walked out as well.

Since then, store policy has been changed.

While at a Costco in Juneau a couple of years back I bought a brick of .22lr, then strolled up to the checkout counter to pay for it. Young miss behind the counter asks if the ammo was for a handgun. Asked why. She said for handgun ammo they had to make sure I was over 21 and record my ID. I was about half a century past my 21st birthday - I'm pretty sure she'd already guessed that, but as for the ID bit I said "no, it's for a rifle, see (holding up the brick), it says so right here - .22 Long RIFLE". And without further ado I paid and left with my ammo.

Somebody call me and wake me up! This CANNOT be REAL.

Just when I think I've heard the most outrageous, stupid, bone headed acts ever proclaimed by Man in the People's Republik of Denver, someone passes along news from California and I don't feel so bad about Denver. Even 'DE GOV' - John Hickenlooper ("Fruitloops") looks good compared to Governor Moon Beam Jerry.

You guys gotta do something. Criminal Aliens are coddled while honest tax paying citizens are being bullied by the State Government. Your State Legislature voted in laws that allow illegal foreign nationals to qualify and purchase driver's Licenses. How many of these Jokers vote in State and National Elections NOBODY CAN SAY. As long as they vote - YOU don't have any say.

I even hear that your Prisons are letting Felons walk out the gates to make room. Make room for who? You Gun Owners and Tax Payers? Good grief.

Yer right LD, I forgot how liberal SD had become. When I traveled there it was 50% Hispanic (40% of those illegal and 10% green card/day workers), and not a bad place to visit. Yes coastal region had the majority of the leftist liberals and I raised a few eyebrows when I flew my Stars and Bars below my Christian flag from the mast of my boat. Old
glory flew from the stern flagstaff as per "marine etiquette".

I'm not worried in the leist about my future as a free man. I've made a pact with myself long ago that I'd die a free man, after that happens, however that happens, it really won't much matter.

I am pretty sure it's a single license that's good for all purchases. From what I hear they have a snag though. The US DOJ is refusing to agree to do the required background checks for CA because it would clog up the system with ammo purchases. Let's hope this little flaw proves fatal...

WA seems to trying out the CA type gun laws. They had the Assault weapon law die and another die, but took the second law and change to wording in it and it is now going up for vote. This one will make it illegal to have a loaded gun in your house for protection. All Guns in the home must be Unlaoded and Locked up unless in use. First offense is a misdemeanor, second offense is a Gross Misdemeanor, third is a Felony. Problem with the law is How are they going to know if your gun is rendered useless? They have to have a Warrant to just come to my house to see if I am following the law. Then my answer will be it is in use at the moment protecting my family and myself.

Might be worth looking into Bullets and Cases too. Primers by the brick would take up little room you could probably fit 15 or 20 bricks in a decent boot box. Maybe 4 8# jugs of powder in a medium Moving box available at U-Haul or Home Depot. Labeled as Household goods.

Your Kommifornia legislature/governor is using their authority to increase revenues by any method possible. I can't wait to see what they come up with once Trump strips them of their federal funds for being a sanctuary state.

Leave as quickly as possible. Eventually, there will be NO non-governmental wage-earners there and the state will collapse under the weight of their own Lib biases.

I don't think this is about revenue. Banning guns and ammo reduces sales taxes a lot; they are expensive and popular items.

Governor Brown and former Attorney General Kamala Harris are rabidly ant-gun, they would ban all guns and ammo if they could. And now she's United States Senator Kamala Harris. That's right folks, our loss is YOUR ga...... oops, loss. Watch out for this one, she's smart and nasty and a woman and a minority. She will rise rapidly in the Party.
