100-round ammo boxes

Just saw an ad for some, and it got me wondering. How many folks use 'em?

I've got some. More than "some". I got a wild hair, some years back, and decided that if 50-round boxes were good (and I got bunches of 50s) then hundreds oughta be better.

They're not. Leastways, not for me. They're too big. They don't fit as nicely in a 50-caliber can, when going to the range. And I have a tendency to take "several" guns, when I go shoot.

Took my daughter's boyfriend (who had never shot a gun before). Brought these.

Hundred-round boxes, for bunches of guns, turns out to be waaay more ammo than I want to tote around.

That day had 22, 25, 380, 38, 9mm, 357, 40, 44 Russian, 44 special, 44 magnum, 45 AR, 45 ACP, 45 Colt and 454. Nineteen guns, fourteen different calibers.

Now I suppose that if I was prairie dog hunting with a 22 Hornet, having a hundred-round box would make sense. Or a benchrest shooter. Or any other type where I've only got one gun out.

But I never only take one.

So, back to the original question. Anybody use hundreds?

I use both 50s and 100s as well as 50 cal cans full of bullets, just depends on the ammo and how much I shoot of it. My 55 gr FMJ goes in the cans because I load a couple hundred at a time and shoot between 100-250 in a sitting. my 75 gr match bullets go in the 100 round boxes because that is usually what I shoot in one sitting. All of my hunting bullets except 30-30 go in 50 rd boxes. 30-30 hunting rounds go in old 20 rd boxes because I never shoot them.

I use 100 round boxes. I keep all my ammo in ammo cans, I keep old 50 round cardboard boxes to bulk store them. However, for each caliber I reload I have 2 100 round containers, for me, these few keep well in a small 30cal ammo can, they actually fit perfectly! When I go shoot, I bring X amount of the 100 rounders with me, and just replenish them later on. They are also nice for load testing, I'll just put them in the case, sharpie X rounds on the back and when I go shoot I'll see exactly what I'm dealing with.

So yes, for small range quantities, 100 rounders are the best! Purely for ammo storage, regular cardboard containers are best!

I don't believe I've ever een a hundred rd box. I've got a number of 50's but mostly for handgun's. I do have a bunch of 50's for rifles but seldom load up 50 rds at one time. I just don't carry all that much ammo when I go out to shoot other thn handguns. Even then I seldom shoot more than 50 rds. Guy that's a higher volume shooter than me might find it more convenient. I guess if box's were made that hold 500 rds, there would be a market for them! I was reading about varmint's on the Rosebud by Steve Timm a few years ago. I don't recall the amount of ammo he took along but it was in the thousand's. I'm pretty close to a life time supply of case's for all my weapons but don't have a thousand of anything.

I too, can't remember buying a 100 round box of ammo, except 22 LR has some 325 round boxes (loose). I can remember buying ammo, one box for my then new 308 bolt gun (maybe two?), one lot of 200 rnds from CMP for my Garand (military surplus), and one box for my new to me 45 ACP. I reload...

I use both 100 round and 50 round boxes for handgun ammo, I inherited a bunch of Plastic 20 round boxes for rifle ammo. Also I tend to horde empty Factory Ammo boxes in the Calibers I reload for, I just attach my Load sticker to the cardboard Sleeves. I don't carry ammo cans to the range, just my range bag. I can easily fit 10 100 round Boxes in it with all my other range stuff. If I am just transporting ammo from one place to another I do it in locked ammo cans. I also store my ammo in ammo cans in my reloading room.

32cal pistol in 100rnd boxes and 45acp in 50's. I do have a few 100rnd 45's, but find them cumbersome for my needs. I still use them for storing my lead plinking loads though.

A while back, I bought a neat combination from MTM, but the selection of sizes was very small. It consisted of a number of 100-rd boxes that all fit into one larger ammo can with a carrying handle. I got one for 9mm/380 and another, larger set for .243/30-30. I wish I could find a set to fit .30-06 and .45 Auto, since that would fill out my collection of calibers I commonly shoot, but whatever store I was in didn't have those in stock. I probably could find them online, but I've been lazy about it.

I bought a bunch (10-15?) of the 9mm, 100 round MTM boxes, but I did not like them at all.

First off, when bullet up, they are almost impossible for my fingers to get them out of the box (I load them bulled down now, and it is not an issue), and secondly, they don't fit well in any of my ammo boxes.

For 9mm now, I put 100 rounds in a zip lock baggie with a sachet of desiccant and a sticker on the side of the bag with the loading info. Much easier to carry and sort, plus it makes counting easier than just filling a ammo box with loose ammo.

I still use them for my "match grade" 9mm, but for the majority of my loads, they are just not practical for my needs.
