Homemade Target Stand
 

Hey guys,

If y'all don't mind, I would like to see some pictures on your target stands. Looking to build one for my country property.

I aint got pics because i dont live at my range but i built me some backers, Think if a floor with 1 wall and gusset supports to stabilize the wall and hold it at a slight angle. Then with a backhoe i piled dirt on the floor til i had a mound taller than the wall. Essentially a dirtpile with a wooden side that i staple my targets to.

They dont have to be real big either. My 100, 150, 200 and 250 yd piles are 4X8 and my 25 and 50yd piles are 4X4

I use the $20 target stands made by Caldwell when shooting paper, but I mostly teach and train on these steel targets. $175 worth of steel, and about 2 hours of welding made the three of 'em...

Jay, that is a first class set up. I have a hodge podge set up that is always changing as someone comes up with another idea. I have basically the same sort of thing at 50feet for handguns and then again at 25,50,75 & 100 yards for rifle plinking. The round steel is Arntzen hanging from plant hooks and fence posts and the square steel is just mild steel picked up where ever I can get it. You can easily slip new paper/cardboard targets in the frame when they need replacement. Most center fire rifle shots will blast right through the mild steel. The Arntzen steel is tempered hard and will hold up to center fire if at 100 yards or more.

You have an excellent set up, Todd!
That's what I was wantong to do with mine when I first got mine set up but I went with just a basic backstop...needs some modifiying!

This is what I made for around the house. They are cheap, and weigh around 15 lbs. Move it to where ever I want. Note the cinder block on the base? It's so light that it gets blown down by the wind. The second one is one I picked up on line, but haven't tried it yet. I shoot a lot of steel targets too. From .22 to .308. Take a look at what Academy has to offer.

Thanks, it's just something I threw togeather with what I had on hand. I really like what you guys have set up, man that's classy! Yeah, I put some porch paint on it. Unprotected pine don't last long down here in the south!

Mine are mostly steel rods drove into the ground. Some are bent to make a hole to put another rod through to hang targets from, others have holes drilled as to put another rod through.
I have one that is just an "L" shaped rod to drive into the ground to hang a target from.

I used to use 2x4s cut to a point on one end to drive into the ground, on the other end a large hole was drilled to accept a steel rod.

Here's what i had set up while shooting the Single Ten at 100yds.
I took a couple of metal marker stakes with flanged ends and bent
them, (tried to get then bent, level with the ground where I set them).

Those heavy steel wire "U" shaped political sign holders that are all over the place around election time make some good temporary target holders. Use some spring/wood clothes pins to hold the target. I used them a lot before I put some more permanent holders.

The golf balls take a goodly number of hits and still are serviceable. I have one hanging from a shepherds hook by putting a small screw eye in the ball and hanging it on 12-18" of strong cord. Got on at 50 yards and one at 100 yards. They spin around real nice when hit. I tried using wire but they don't spin well with wire so went back to the cord. Just have to put up with hitting the cord and cutting it once in a while. Makes a fun target for everyone.

You're right Todd about political signs. The ones that are corragated plastic are great when you use those sticky targets. I can put one 5" sticky in each corner and stick them small diameter wires right in the ground with ease until it gets too cold. I always use my competitors signs too!;)

One of the local politicians ended his career and dumped a pot load of those plastic corrugated signs in the dumpster at one of the Old Guys church so he grabbed them and is now supplying the range. You are right they are great.

With the federal HP's they go in and seem to stop (100yds) but seems the CCI Blazers tear 'em uo more-so...
