Why Not Colt?
 

OK, I'm sligthtly biased - I don't like "Rock Island Armory," poaching on the name of Rock Island Arsonal. Ditto for Springfield. I prefer a made-in-USA real Colt 1911 - available in stainless or blued.

Colt is vastly overpriced for what you get. Yeah it's a pretty gun but the RIA will run everything you put in it right out of the box.

Colts are great if you just want to collect Guns, they are 100% American made and made by unionized employees thus the high price it doesnt mean that they are better than other guns.

I have 2 Taurus PT 1911's and they are better fitted and more accurate than my 1978 made series 70 Colt.

The late 1970's were dreadful times for American manufacturing. My father's company car was once a 1979 Mercury Monarch. The heater never worked. The dealer service manager finally told him "You might as well stop bringing it back. We can't fix it!" Great news to get in Wisconsin.

No, no they won't. Not out of the box anyway. They might run with hardball but there's plenty that hiccup on HP's and SWC's.

only 1911 i had that was picky was the Kimber , and i was awful suss on that barrel and chamber from day 1 , but gun control came and they all went away ...

nothing wrong with colt , mill spec do have issues with over long rounds , stick to within spec and it'll be A OK , it's a 1911 ...

You must know a lot more than I do. Tell me about your experience with non feeding 1911's.

I know years ago that LSWC ammo and hollow point ammo gave problems since the 1911 was designed to shoot 230 gr ball ammo. The manufactuers started throating the barrels, polishing the feed ramp and got away from the problem. Any new 1911,when properly cleaned, with a good magazine should function out of the box.

Other than Baer, Nighthawk & Wilson, I've owned and used just about every make of 1911 there is - including Dan Wesson, STI, Kimber (series 1 & 2), Colt, Taurus, Springfield, Rock Island (and other PI variants), S&W, Sig, and probably others. My current crop is Colt, Kimber, Springfield, Taurus, PI built (American Classic), and a custom built on a Caspian slide/frame.

To say that the Rock Island will do everything any other brand will shows ignorance - the frame & slide are not strong enough for a .460 Rowland conversion for example. To say all Kimbers are overpriced junk shows ignorance as well as I (and many others) have Kimbers that function 100%. The same goes for Colt, Springer and everything else.

A Kia will get you from point A to point B just fine - why is it not the only car sold?

This reverse snobbery is irritating and not justified at all. If I want to pay the money for a Colt, Kimber, or Dan Wesson - why should I not? Am I stupid for not buying another Rock Island? All brands have their good & bad points and all manufacturers produce a lemon now and again - just the facts of life. Do your research and pick the brand that meets YOUR needs and be happy...

I've owned Colts and they didn't run SWC's worth a crap without some work. Not saying you shouldn't buy a Colt. I'm just saying they're overpriced and the RIA will run whatever you put in it straight out of the box. Heck I wouldn't mind owning another Colt, they're nice guns but I wouldn't depend on it like I can the Rock.

Any properly fitted 1911 thats throated with a smooth feed ramp will feed anything. The early colts with unthroated barrels and rough ramps are the reason the 'colt will only feed hardball' rumors exist.

I dont care what anyone says, the best '1911 bangs for your bucks' come from the RIAs, Taurus', Spartans, Citadels, American Classics, etc.. All of which are either brazilian or Phillipino, or as in the case of the Spartan, built in TX on phillipino frames.

I currently own Kimber 1911s, Colt 1911s, a Springfield 1911, a Para LDA 1911, and a S&W 1911. I have also owned a Rock Island and a Charles Daly.

The Rock and Daly pistols will work but my Rock didn't like hollow points of any flavor. My Daly was perfect with HPs but was very roughly finished. Were they as accurate or did they have the fit/finish as well as my Colts or Kimbers; No they weren't and didn't.

The majority of my pistols are Colts. I have an early Springfield with the forged frame that I gave to my son. I've owned others including running down the gun shop when the first Randall's showed up. Someone once told me, "stick with Colt". Regardless what anyone can say, they hold their value. They were never a cheap gun not years ago and certainly not now. I have Series 70's, Series 80's and pre-war Government Models (those are some of the nicest ever made IMO. Generally, they work well with no problems. The pistol was designed to fire hardball ammo, no guarantees about hollow points of SWC bullets. My Series 70 Gold Cup fired thousands of 185 and 200 grain cast SWC bullets in many bullseye matches with very few failures. Most of those were traced to my reloading or a magazine gone bad. Am I sold on Colt, yes! Some day most of them will go to my son and maybe his after that. They are American Classics.

For many years, the Argentine Sistemas were sleepers but I see the prices of those are going up as well. They really are nicely made pistols and most Colt parts or other aftermarket will drop in with little or no fitting. I've converted a couple to Super .38 with very little trouble. I think I would rather have one of those over some of the other clones currently on the market. The finish on many of them is poor, but it doesn't cost much to have one parkerized and add a nicer set of grips. USGI Keyes look pretty good on them. If you want to "trick" it out with beaver tails, triggers, hammers etc that will work too.

To answer your question - "Why not Colt?" I would also answer with "Why not Colt?" If you can afford one, I would say it's worth every penny.

I chose Springfield simply because it was more available in my area, and offered the features I wanted at a price I could afford. Is Colt higher quality? Of course. But that's not to say that my Springfield is junk. It just isn't a Colt.

There is only 1 colt I want. The Delta Elite that is the only one I am willing to over pay for.

My Kimber has been FLAWLESS from day one. I picked it up and drove out of town stopped and ran 10 mags of 230gr Ball ammo through it. Not a single problem with mine ever. From the 200gr TC Rainer to 230 gr Federal Hydroshock.

I am not sure why so many hate on Kimber. When I was looking for a 1911 the Kimber offered every feature I was looking for at a price I could afford. the Colt was almost double what I paid for my Kimber.

I would buy an RIA as well. Watched a buddy throw his 10 yards down range run down and pick it up slap a mag in it and empty it as fast as he could pull the trigger.

There is only one !911 Pistol it is only made by Colt U.S.A.:) If you want a copy made in China or on a jungle island its your choice. American handgunners love their Colts. If you don't think so look at the value of used ones.:eek:

Dont forget the Remington and Rugers too! I have a Remington R1 and its been fantastic so far with only about 350 rounds through it. Accurate as all hell too.

In my opinion, Colts are one of the best. But unless you are offering to buy a colt for everyone that wants a 1911, then it is really up to the person using it. I have seen Rock Islands out shoot Colts on multiple occasions. If that's what I can afford on the market then that is what I am gonna get.
