Percussion caps exploding?

Why are my caps ripping apart? I test fired the #11 caps I bought for my new .44 and this was the result on all 6!

Is this normal? If not, WTF?

They usually tear like a banana being peeled. Sometime mine separate into several pieces. I'm using CCI #10's on a Pietta 1860 army. My Kentucky Jukar rifle will take #11 Remington. They split also. So yes your picture is somewhat normal but maybe a little more tore up than normal. ALWAYS wear wrap around safety glasses.

Thanks, it has been YEARS (30+) since I fired cap & Ball and didn't remember it being that bad...

You might try replacing the nipples.

That's normal. If they don't split apart they have to be pried off.

hiya hawg!!!

my remmy does that and i do the "gunfighter flip" (barrel up while cocking after firing so the caps fall away)

i have found that, just as reliable but way more corrosive, use the cheap plastic cap gun caps... and they never jam up my remmy... but you really got to do some good cleaning of your nipples after shooting, they will get cligged up with that paper they use on those things. which, incidently, you can peel off. just pick at the paper with a needle then pull it out with tweezers... they are almost 100% reliable that way...

I wondered about those plastic caps suzukibruce; way less expensive than regular caps, if I can find them over here.

My Remington NMA does exactly the same thing. It's partly why glasses are as important as ear protection shooting cap and ball.

Hey Bruce, you're getting around some these days.
Maybe reliable with real black but only about 2 out of 6 set off Pyrodex.

I once bought some German caps that didn't split. I had to pry them off with a pocket knife, and it was a real PITA. I used maybe a dozen and still have most of the box.

I use the german caps and they split on mine. I have had some of all brands not split (normal because they didn't fire) and they are a PIA to remove. I prefer the Noble Dynanmite #1075 . I will use whatever when I have too.

Must remember the flip
