you where right first time SO MO the US dictionary goes back 200 years and it was correct then it was written as single S only as late as 1924 .. most of these spelling quirks you folks have are from 1910 -1930 when you decided you'd spell different from everyone else or put a illiterate in charge of it all

but you where correct and that predates the USA .. ;)
