Pictures of Damaged Brass
 

I was hoping that some of you had pictures of damaged brass.
Cracks, dented mouth, head separation, and the like..
I have several 100 brass casings from everything pistol to rifle that I'm inspecting. My awesome girlfriend wants to help... Problem is, she doesn't know what she is looking for. I can't find pics online of damaged brass and I don't have any laying round that are damaged to show her. Does this one look good? What about this one? I could be doing this faster if I did it myself...

I think it would be helpful not only to her, but to others who come to this forum to learn, to have a dedicated Thread on what damaged brass looks like and how to identify them.

Look in any one of your reloading manuals. There should be a full section on brass prep complete with illustrations. My Lyman 49th and Hornady 8th (manuals I happen to have here by the puter) both have full sections on them. The Hdy 8th is in full color too.

That's all I found also. Those seem to be gun related damage and not old and stretched brass damage.

i have some brass in my garbage box with split mounts, fissured case bodies, and dented shoulders.. if I get some time I'll take pics. ps.. at least one of the ? 7 manuals I have (maybee lee? ) has a good set of pics on damaged brass..

Although, even without any pics, it should be visible to the eye...
anything out of the ordinary, and she should be able to spot any easily....
unless it is stressed brass without a split, but a minor bulge that may not split until the next firing. Mic will prolly only tell that tale....

95% of my brass is used, gifted, range picked up, etc. I get what i can.. go thru it.. tos the bad ones. after every laoding I reinspect the spents and toss anything bad.

I have bought boxes of used mixed brass at gun shows for 1-4 cents per cartridge.. mixed caliber, mixed head stamp, mixed crimped and non crimped primers ( all boxer ).. .. I go thru it and toss anything damaged, and trade off stuff I don't relaod to other people.. at those low prices for what is usually range brass or a couple x frired.. i expect a few bad ones to show up and due to the low price, i don't sweat it much either.

so far none of my virgin brass or any I've opted to save and relaod have ruptured on me.. but then i inspect them pretty good and toss anything questionable.. it's always recyclable so i don't loose much money especially onthe bulk 1c per round range stuff i sometimes scrounge up.

no hot loads for me. I like staying a few % under max... some of my best 30-06 loads with imr 4064 are middle of the road at 47.5g pushing a 180g sprie point flat bottom etc..

Some bulge is normal, the FL die will smooth it out. Your chambers may be a little on the max spec side of the headspace tolerance.

I heard if I'm reloading for accuracy, I shouldn't FL size it... Just the neck. That way the case is already shaped to the chamber. Therefore the bullet is pretty darn close to perfectly centered.

True, but if youre shooting 2 different rifles and dont keep the brass separate chances are cases shot in one wont fit in the other.

In addition to pics there is a sure-fire way to find cracked brass in particular and it is very easy and nearly fool proof.

Try this;

Take a handful of brass, put a known piece with a crack in it with the good brass and just shake it in your hands or pour it back and forth between one hand and the other and listen as the cracked brass makes a very definitive, and unmistakeable sound. Remove the cracked brass from the good brass and pour or shake them again and you will hear the difference. So in the future if you are making your initial check, if you have any cracked brass in your lots you will never have trouble finding it again.

Hope this helps all who have never tried it as it really does work and is quick and easy.
