Question
 

Ok folks, I live in northeast Florida and am planning on planting a winter food plot. It's about a quarter acre in size, has good moisture and sun but of course it will require lime and fertilizer. My question is what do you think I should plant? What I'm tossing around is one of the following three:
Turnip
Radish
Sugar Beets

Any input will be well received. Thanks in advance.

(EDIT) Maybe I should have specified that the food plot is for the deer in my hunting area.

Sugar Beets...[of your choices]
They can well and you can live on them.
Radishes are good for purifying your blood,
but how many can you eat a day...?
I don't like/eat turnips, and if you want the greens,
you will have them on the beets.
Hogs will eat turnips....

If you like greens, then go with turnips, colards, and mustard greens. Only the turnip greens will produce a root that you can eat. How about some potatoes, cabbage, or some garlic. Lettuce, collards, snow peas, cabbage and broccoli should all do well, thoughg it might be a little late for patatoes. The sugar beats are a good idea.

Sugar beets? For people food? My understanding has always been that sugar beets, like sugar cane, is not so much "eaten as is" but is processed into sugar.

Yes, folks eat beets, but beets, like come in the can down at the store, are not sugar beets. Different strain.

Back to the question.

I don't know if this is true, but read many years back where this kid planted sugar beets, and when he thinned 'em he threw the thinnings to the hogs. Said that the pork that year was uncommonly sweet.

Since I presume your plan it to shoot a deer or twenty, and stick 'em in the freezer, I'd go with the sugar beets.

try talking to the county or state biologist,i know we have them in indiana and they will tell you what grows best in your area.make sure to tell them it is a food plot for deer and or hogs. old semperfi
