Authorities seize guns in SW Michigan traffic stop

Looking at the guns they seized how many times have you gone to the range with something like this in your car?

The Van Buren County sheriff's department said in a statement that a 37-year-old man from the Detroit area was arrested following Thursday's stop in Antwerp Township. He told authorities that the guns belonged to him, and he was taking them from the Chicago area to the Detroit area.

Five hand-guns, two rifles, two shotguns , plus some ammo.
Sounds about average for a trip to the range .

well... lets see, If in fact they stopped him for traffic violations and discovered he had warrants, then they had probable cause for searching his vehicle...
Now being that they were all nicely stored in proper travel cases and (i'm assuming, it wasn't mentioned) the ammo was separately stored, not too much would have been wrong.....
BUT... warrants here in MI... dont get caught with a gun if you have one! Make darn well sure your suppressors are registered (they are legal here in MI), make sure your hand guns are registered, (rifles on private sales don't have paper work) And if anything is out of order... Yes, you will loose your guns!

Looks to be all in a case and transported legally. They say he had an illegal silencer. Looks to me as another case of the cop's making up the laws as they go.

I feel bad for this guy as he most likely will never see these guns again.

You mean you need to register every gun in your state? That's worse than Illinois. You have to register in Chicago but not the rest of the state. Here we register gun owners, not guns.

Those warrants could have been unpaid parking tickets.

Was it really a silencer, or one of them fake ones that are so popular with the people that like MACs?

Because, of course, the news always gets it right.

If it was a real one, then it is illegal, since he says he was bringing them from the "Chicago area", and they are illegal in Illinois. If he had a real one in Illinois, it was unregistered, 'cause the Feds would not have registered it in Illinois.

I was just saying... having a warrant (whether you know it or not) + guns in your possession = bad stuff. The "law" will make any B.S. reason they want to to take your stuff until you can prove your innocence (some times that wont even get them back).
Suppressors are legal in MI "IF" registered. Where you take them after that is your responsibility! Hand guns... Have to be registered.... thats easy, long guns..Only if sold through a dealer (not private sales) and thats even easier!
Be responsible, follow the local regulations, watch you back (no one else will), and be smart.. you wont typically have a problem (unless the government decides to change the second amendment)!

Re: Authorities seize guns in SW Michigan traffic stop

I wouldn't say you won't have a problem as the cop's can say anything they want to get you in trouble. I live in a suburb of Chicago and I wouldn't bring a gun there for any reason.

We don't have to register any guns in this state. Only gun owners. I don't like having to register guns as when they want to take them they know were to go and what you have.

I wish I knew more details......it seems as though you cant even go to the range anymore....

Re: Authorities seize guns in SW Michigan traffic stop

I'd like more details as well, but I do know having a warrant and weapons in your car is not a good combo regardless if it's a warrant for unpaid parking tickets or not, they'll sieze them. It don't make it right but that's the way it is. They look for any excuse to take your firearms.

So you think a warrant for parking tickets would have made the outcome different? Your last comment rings loudly, "they look for any excuse to take your firearms".... we are talking about the police, correct?....why do suppose that is? Maybe someone can explain that to me.....

DD did we not have this discussion this week? Just a few days ago? Remember the old lady that got pulled over and thrown out the van to kiss the asphalt? What did i say in that thread? What did i say? Its pay dirt for the "maintance pull it over" and let me see what i can confiscate from you. And it pays for itself 200 to 2000 a pop. You dont think this guy is in for 2K at least? Maintance pull over every 3000 miles or 6months which ever comes first. Just add more police, all you need.

I don't know whats going on. I didn't think much of it but I have been pulled over 3 times in the last week. I haven't been pulled over in years now 3 times in 2 weeks.

As soon as they run the numbers and see who owns the van I drive they let me go.

think that's bad? At leist three days a week for the past year at leist I have them sitting across the street from my house. Usually for a few hours in the evenings. They just watch me and the family doing our thing. If one of us has to leave they'll follow us to the city limits. I'm always polite and wave at them, I even sat in my garage with the door open cleaning guns today after I got home from the range, naturally making sure i'm within full view of them. Sometimes i'll get a little upity about it and get the binos out and stand in the driveway looking at them when their only 30 feet away from me :D. Usually when I break those out is when they'll leave.

Re: Authorities seize guns in SW Michigan traffic stop

i sure hope the guy in SW MI didn't have all his guns with him at the time.

this is why it's always a good idea to leave at least one or two guns w/ ammo separate from your main "arsenal". even if it means making an extra trip when moving, it's worth it if you end up with at least one gun versus none at all.

also, pay your parking/speeding tickets on time!

Definition of ARSENAL (Webster's Dictionary)
1a : an establishment for the manufacture or storage of arms and military equipment

Really............. That’s a bit of a stretch
