Picking peppers from the garden
1 Attachment(s)
Went out to pick peppers this morning, the plants are really loaded. This cooler weather has brought on a new crop. That's all that's left in the garden, one forty foot row of different kinds of peppers.

Re: Picking peppers from the garden
Nice! The same here in Tennessee. Got lots of peppers right now. I think they did the best through the summer drought.

Re: Picking peppers from the garden
My habaneros are in the fountain garden in the back yard, they are also loaded, just not ready to pick right now.

Re: Picking peppers from the garden
Very nice. We got hammered with jalepenos and bells. The bells didn't seem to get to any great sizr but they will still make sweet stuffed peppers and pepper steak. Pickled and canned a bunch of jalepenos and made and canned some jalepeno jelly.

Re: Picking peppers from the garden
looks like a real healthy crop you have there. It was way too hot here this year fr much of anything.

Re: Picking peppers from the garden
Ooh those look good. My parents grow peppers here too but I think they're all done cause it's getting too cold n starting to freeze overnight. I'll go take some pics if there's any left on the plants.

Re: Picking peppers from the garden
I've really only in the last couple years got into eating peppers. Grew my own jalapenos this year. Tasted great, but never really got big. Next year I"m gonna plant more, and I'm gonna try and can them. Yesterday we went to a Apple Festival and they had a bunch of craft booths set up. One lady had a bunch of hot jellys and stuff. One of the jars was Cowboy Candy. Candied jalapenos. Oh Hell Yea!. I'm gonna try and make those next year too. Maybe this year if there is enough peppers left off my two little plants.

Re: Picking peppers from the garden
The deer ate all of my habaneros this year---peppers, leaves, and stems. I've grown them and other varieties in past years.
I take some pleasure in imagining how they felt in a few hours. (They also ate my okra down to the stalk.) |
Re: Picking peppers from the garden
i covered all mine last night for fear of frost
calling for rain today and possible frost tonight, so i am going to pick a peck of unpickled peppers prior to precipitation:D |

Re: Picking peppers from the garden
Wow, you got quite a haul too. Your dog likes hot peppers? That is pretty crazy. :) If I eat the really hot stuff they burn on both ends. I wouldn't think a dog would like that. I don't, only 1 end.

Re: Picking peppers from the garden
Now's the time to make pickled peppers !
Apple cider or white vinegar, canning/pickling salt, a handful of crushed garlic cloves, some onion. I generally use a 2-1 ration of vinegar to water, a handful of salt, slice the onions thick l Wash and stuff the onion garlic and whatever mixture of peppers you want into a 1-gallon pickle jar. Fill with brine, cap and put in a fridge or very cool place. In a couple of weeks, enjoy ! You can also add other veggies like cauliflower to the jar if desired. Hard boiled eggs go well, too ! Want the sweet/sour thing ? Add a handful of brown sugar to the brine - but I suggest heating it to dissolve the sugar - then cooling it to room temp before adding to your "pickles" ! You can also add whatever spices/herbs you like ( say dill, or mint, etc) to the brine if the spirit moves you to ! Its all good ! >MW |
