Snake in the woods...

Ran across this guy in the woods behind my condo today...

...right beside a small stream.

Maybe two feet long.

He looks pretty mean but he's actually just a common brown water snake.

Dangerous only if you happen to be a frog or small fish. :)

Don't care, it would be dead already.

Gracious! Why?
Killing a harmless and/or beneficial snake strikes me as the equivalent of killing a robin or mockingbird.

I remember way back as a kid, I'd set out shiner traps in the creek to use for bait fishing. I get some shiners in there and then some water snakes would get through holes which would drowned, then crawfish would eat the snakes down to the bones. More water snakes in those creeks than I'd ever imagined.

Once a few of us as kids were trout fishing in this waist deep creek that had over hanging trees. We'd sneak in and catch nice trout. My one buddy had a small snake fall down into his waders and he drank lots of creek water until we pulled him out. He could feel the snake down on his leg, ha ha.

Don't kill it. Just move it closer to where it likes to hunt.

I am not real fond of snakes myself. I wouldn't kill them as they are needed in nature.

When we lived back East in Western Pa, I'd catch blk snakes 4-5 times every summer on the road out past our house; usually after a summer rain storm. I'd take them back the house and release them in this rock pile along my lane; some would stay close too, unless the hound got them. The dog would dart in and grab snake in middle and bite in half and these were 5-6 foot snakes. You'd see two snakes flying in opposite directions.

Wife never liked it as I'd make her shift gears as I had the snake all up my arm, just holding onto the head with my grip of steel, ha ha. Then she'd really go nuts when she'd see the snakes in the yard when she was hanging clothes on the line. I kinda miss the snakes up here in Alaska, too cold.

Looks like a common water snake, not to be confused with the venomous version, it also looks like it may have just had a meal notice how his body is bulged out some
