Yes...it IS a matial art....

No, it doesn't have some asian roots and a correspondingly exotic sounding name like karate, kung fu, tae kwon do, hoo flung dung or whatever.

But the study of the use of the handgun, shotgun and rifle in defense is THE modern martial art IMHO.

I am tired of getting sneers from people who practice unarmed combat when I tell them i practice as heavily armed as possible combat.

My martial art is not as pretty and steeped in history as theirs....but it fits the real world.

The samurai carried at least two and sometimes three bladed weapons..there may be a lesson there.

Don't forget the bow and crossbow, TWANG-------THUNK------ow.

Or my cane, just because I'm old and crippled don't mean I'm defenseless. WhackWhack --- ow.

Now you're talking! My cane is hollow, but strong. I melted a cup of lead pellets and drilled a hole about 2" from the bottom of my cane and poured in the melted lead. A little heavy, but comfortable to walk with.

It's a kneecap buster, for sure. I'll probably never have the need to use it. But it's nice to have that option.

Let me just add... At 72, I'm slower, out of shape, and not as cocky as I was when I was younger. I didn't play we'll with others, nor did I trust anyone. But I'm a wiser man now, and find that making a friend is so much better then making an enemy.

I truly believe what I say, but I still walk softly and carry a big stick. Just in case. ;)

Have a great day my friends.

That's the new traditional definition but if you dig a little you will find it is Latin for Arts of Mars. That included everything form javelin throwing to sword fighting to boxing.. If the art was used in combat it was a martial art. Old Mars just liked to fight by whatever method so if you worshiped Mars and practiced hurting other people by some method and got good at it you were by definition a martial artist.

Sorry bout that but us old Etymologists just have to dip our oar in the water once in awhile just to stay in practice. Maybe it's why I spent a lot of time alone at parties, or my long green Mexican cigars. :D

but old grump , Mars was armed witha javelin a shield and a obsidian knife

all manual weapons

you needed skill to use them and why Martial came to being ( as used by mars or martial )

and firearm aint a manual thing its power is derived chemically , unless you put a botonet on the end and use it that way

then its once again a martial art or skill

If the worshipers of Mars would have known about Fn Fal 1A1 rifles, hand grenades and ballistics vests don't you think the illustrations and statues would have been revised?

I agree with Jack here. Shooting is a skill at arms, and a sport at times, but martial arts it is not.
