Does anyone know where I can find good cheap ammo for this? Has to be reloadable, my dad wants to use it durin rifle season. If this is in the wrong place I won't be offended if its moved.

Cabelas sells the S&B Brand 7,62x54R with a 180 gr soft point for $22 for a 20 round box. Next to reloading that should at least be a bit better than using the old surplus FMJ? The price is not unreasonable either.

The S&B brass is good too. Good hunting handload is 45 gr VARGET and a 180 gr sierra gameking. .311" dia of course.

Uh probably a dumb question here, but..... I was lookin round fer more info on this particular gun and saw that I would need to slug the barrel to see if it was the correct diameter. WHAT?????? How often are the barrels worn out on these things? Also Hodgden's website lists a .308 diameter bullet. Now I'm confused. :confused:HELP PLEASE!!!

Re: 7.62x54 hunting ammo

I suspect the OP has a Mosin Nagant of some variety or another - I have a 91/30 myself and while it IS a fun beastie to shoot, especially with low cost milsurp ammo, I can't say that I'd want to have to schlepp that rather long wood covered anvil over the river and through the woods for hunting. lol

THere are too many low cost Savage hunting rifles out there, new and used.

Re: 7.62x54 hunting ammo

per the Wiki articles, the following are rifles that have been chambered in 7.62x54R - not shown are all the models of machine gun that used the round.

Rifles
The various Mosin-Nagant bolt-action rifles including the sawn-off "Obrez" pistol.
The American Winchester Model 1895. Approximately 300,000 made for the Russian army in 1915-16.
AVB-7.62
AVS-36
Dragunov sniper rifle (including Chinese NDM-86 variant)
JS 7.62
SVT-38 and SVT-40
PSL sniper rifle
M91
Berkut-2M1
IZH-18MH
SV-98 (Snaiperskaya Vintovka Model 1998)
Alejandro Sniper Rifle

It is most probable that your dad has one the Mosin-Nagants. There is NOTHING wrong with them either of course, it is plenty accurate enough for most common hunting uses out to a couple hundred yards. My brother can ring the 1000 yard gong most times with his 91/30 with a Scout scope.

Re: 7.62x54 hunting ammo

Open sights with surplus fmj he can hit a coyote at 300 yards so defiantly accurate enough fer a long deer rifle.
