Re: Know what today is??????????
Yes I do; our base is having a ceremony for the Sailor of the Year award too.
I always remember; a large portion of America does not. |

Re: Know what today is??????????
Yes I do. I had the honor of once meeting a gentleman who had received the Medal of Honor for his service at Pearl Harbor. At the time he was the oldest living recipient. I was pleased to see that there was an Honor Flight to get some of the old vets back to Pearl Harbor this year.

Re: Know what today is??????????
There will be much of that here in San Diego today; the Sub Base is right below the Rosecrans National Cemetary.

Re: Know what today is??????????
I worked with a Pearl Harbor survivor. He put in his 20 in the Navy and then went to work for the government. He was there when I got there and was still working when I retired 20 years later.

Anyone who attacks America like that will feel the wrath! We will nuke you or hunt you down and shoot you in the face. :D |
Re: Know what today is??????????
A date that will live in infamy. I read those words at the new WWII Memorial last weekend and when I read those words I always hear it in Roosevelt's voice from the radio broadcast.

Re: Know what today is??????????
I got to see Pearl Harbor for the first time end of Sept this year; didn't get time to go to the museum for the full tour and all, but got to fly over it on the way in and out of HI.
glad to finally see it with my own eyes. Not sure I want to go to NY NY though, too crowded for my liking! Never forget |

This was the day that made my grandfather lie about his age and join the Navy.
Let us never forget those who have served or why they do it.. |

Re: Know what today is??????????
I re-enlisted aboard the USS Arizona Memorial once. We were all there before it opened to the public. I got that strong, strange feeling that I was being watched from behind.. I had been there a couple of times, but never when it was closed to the public.
The flag that was run up the pole that day is still in a shadow box on my mantle. |
Re: Know what today is??????????
Can't forget it, it's my birthday! And would you believe my brother, and sister (twins), were born on 11-11.

-------------------------- I was also lucky enough to see the the Arizona Memorial in 1979 with my wife and her mom and dad who was a very decorated WWII Army Master Sergeant in so many hell holes in the Pacific. That's why he liked Hawai'i, an R&R from chaos. The Arizona Memorial is amazing, you can see the whole outline of the ship, the big gun turret hollow circles....and the occasional oil droplets coming to the surface. Also a LOT of Jap visitors there too! |
Re: Know what today is??????????
Growing up, my parents talked about it every year. They were both in their mid 20"s when it happened and they were greatly impaced by it. My mom would sometimes cry as she thought of all the lost lives and the brutality of the attack. I think she had a cousin that passed there that day but I'm not certain.
I remember every year. I stop throughout the day to pray for those who are currently in the armed forces protecting our freedom. |
