Does anyone make a long slide 1911 in .40? My buddy and I hate to buy the same caliber in anything and we don't have a 1911, and I really like the .40. Thanks for any help. Other than this I will be looking into one in .45 from Kimber. Most everyone likes Kimber soooooo. LOL

I don't know about "long slide". I've got a stainless AMT, in 40. Bought it because I did not have a 40, so therefore needed one (y'all know how that works, right?). It's a little smaller than "commander" size. Full size grip with a 4" barrel (commander has 4 1/2"). They called it a "Commando".

Les Baer makes a high capacity 1911 in 40 but it is pricey $$$$$. Love to have one. I called and asked if they could supply it with a 357 SIG barrel, they won't. I think it is about $3K.

gene, ya could buy a 1911 with a 10mm long slide and shoot 40smith in it.

10mm is 10x25mm and ".40 smith" is 10x22mm

I am no smith, but I don't think that would be a good idea to try.

i could be wrong but i thought the downsized amt in any caliber was called the skipper ? either way it was a very under-rated gun and priced right . by time amt came out with it they solved their galling problems that gave them a bad name. wish i still had mine

Oscar, maybe in 45, but not in 40.

Alpo, that Commando is a good looking gun. I have owned a couple of AMT's but never the 1911 style.

nice picture alpo, the skipper was in 45 and did not have the same sights.

It came with great big honkin' slide-stop and thumb safety on it. Combine that small gun with that strong a recoil spring and it had some bounce to it.

When I first got it, I was checking it out. Load five rounds in the magazine, shoot it dry. Load five, shoot it, etc. So the gun would be locked back, I'd load a clip into it and reach out and depress the slide-stop. Real easy to do, since it was "extended". Didn't have to shift my grip. Then I'd try to shoot, but it wouldn't fire. Safety was on. Every time. I couldn't understand it. I didn't remember putting the safety on, but there it was. Even when I, intentionally, left it off, it was on.:confused:

Then my mind started working. Ain't no way I could have put the safety on. Slide was back. Gun don't work that way. Whadaheck?:confused::confused:

So this time, instead of looking at the target, as I had every other time (look at target while bringing gun up, depress stop and fire), I watched the gun. The gun jumped so much, under the force of that heavy recoil spring slamming the slide home, that it bounced my hand enough for my thumb to hit the bottom of the extended thumb-safety and put it on.

Hmmm. Time to get out the dremel. If you look closely at that picture, you can see some "shiny" at both the slide-stop and the thumb-safety, where a whole buncha metal has been removed. That "extended" junk is unsafe. Coulda got me kilt, if I had been using it in real life without playin' with it first.

This is a nice piece and a sweet shooter, per my experience anyway... I don't think you'd go wrong with Para Ord.

I own a Para S16 40 Limited and it shoots well but the fit and finish wasn't as nice as expected for a $1000. It isn't better than a .45 but it does hold more ammo, 16 in the mag and one in the tube. I own a Rock River Arms 1911 in .45 and it shoots great and is a no frils 1911 that I paid less than $400 for.

I have a stainless Colt 1911 in .40 S&W with a 5" barrel that I bought in 1992.
