Soldiers Of Allah Or Of America: Does Military Know — Or Care?
By PAUL SPERRY

A store surveillance camera shot showed Muslim Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, accused of the Fort Hood massacre in which 13 were killed and 31 wounded, purchasing a weapon thought to be one used in the shootings....
The Pentagon has launched a 45-day probe into the Fort Hood massacre, promising to find answers to why it happened and how it can be prevented from happening again. But the investigation may prove an exercise in futility, judging from PC remarks by military brass.
"My message to all those in uniform — including Muslims in uniform — is how much we appreciate their service. The diversity of our force is one of its greatest strengths," said the Joint Chiefs chairman, Adm. Mike Mullen, who appeared alongside the defense secretary to announce the inquiry, which reports say will focus on mental health services for troubled troops.
His remarks echoed those of the Army chief of staff, Gen. George Casey, who after the Nov. 5 attack cautioned against linking Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's alleged terrorist act and his Islamic faith. "It would be an even greater tragedy if our diversity becomes a casualty here," Casey intoned.
Military brass appear to be doubling down on the political correctness that blinded them to warning signs telegraphed by the Quran-waving Muslim officer accused of the worst mass killing on a domestic military base in U.S. history and the bloodiest terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.
The breakdown in security stems from "fears over offending a member of a religious minority," finds a report by the Westminster Institute, a security think tank. So worried about conveying any notion that it's at war with Islam, the Defense Department has deluded itself into believing that the enemy is bereft of religious motivation.
Though the enemy clearly states that it's waging "jihad," or holy war, against us, it's now taboo to use the term because it risks reinforcing the idea that the U.S. is at war with Islam itself.
"We are not at war with jihad," a high-ranking Pentagon official said at a recent conference. "Jihad is a legitimate component of Islam" — no worse than fasting or bowing to Mecca.
Even defining the enemy as "jihadist" is no longer acceptable, leaving GIs to fight an enemy their own commanders refuse to name. The 2009 U.S. National Intelligence Strategy, which takes into account Pentagon priorities, uses the term Islam zero times, Muslim 0, jihad 0 and jihadist 0.
In sharp contrast, the 9/11 Commission Report, released in 2004, used the word Islam 322 times, Muslim 145, jihad 126 and jihadist 32. It took five short years to completely whitewash the Islamist threat. Any wonder Hasan was treated with kid gloves?
Shockingly, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service — the Pentagon's anti-terror unit — concluded that Hasan did not merit further investigation after the FBI notified the unit of e-mails between Hasan and a radical Muslim cleric, who happens to be a top al-Qaida recruiter and a key facilitator of the 9/11 hijackers. Hasan was subsequently promoted to the rank of major with a higher security clearance.
In the name of tolerance, the military is wrongfully — and dangerously — tolerating extremists in its midst. It has closed its eyes to a serious internal threat, seemingly more concerned with protecting the enemy's religion than protecting the lives of soldiers fighting the enemy.
If the military is too PC to protect its own troops from Islamic fanatics on its own soil, how can Americans be sure it can protect the rest of the country?
Certainly there are good and decent Muslims who serve, but the armed forces must do a better job of weeding out the radicals. Instead, the military is "going out on a limb" to recruit more Muslims — whose ranks have swelled to more than 15,000 — even in the wake of the Fort Hood betrayal.
"I will say unequivocally that the Department of Defense and services value the Muslim- or Arab-American soldiers and are going out on a limb to bring them into the ranks," said a spokesman for the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, the military's minority recruiter. "Out on a limb" is a good way to describe it, because the outreach policy is fraught with risk.
How does the Pentagon, which has set up a "Diversity Task Force," know which Muslims will put allegiance to country ahead of allegiance to Allah, when as Hasan proved, an obvious conflict exists between the two? Answer: It doesn't know — until it's too late.
Hasan, who after several years of service openly declared, "I'm a Muslim first and an American second," and printed "Soldier of Allah" on his business card, wasn't a random case of treason. He's just the tip of a jihadist Fifth Column operating within the ranks of the U.S. military. Since 9/11 alone, there have been at least a dozen other Muslim soldiers and officers who have been arrested or convicted of terrorism or espionage charges.
They include an Army Muslim chaplain charged with espionage, mishandling classified documents — including drawings of a new prison facility — and lying to investigators. After serving hard time in the stockade, Capt. Yousef Yee was released because of "national security concerns that would arise" at trial, the government said.
However, two of his fellow "Muslim troopers" at Gitmo — senior airman Ahmad al-Halabi and former Army linguist Ahmed Mehalba, both Arabic interpreters — were convicted of stealing or mishandling classified documents. They were busted trying to smuggle the material out of the prison.
Their spy ring lives on. Security officials at Gitmo are investigating what they call "dirty" Arabic translators and Muslim lay leaders sympathetic to al-Qaida detainees. The probe of new Gitmo security breaches is revealed in my book "Muslim Mafia," which quotes from a May 2009 classified military briefing warning that dirty Arabic linguists have penetrated "every branch of the U.S. military."
After the FBI broke up the first Gitmo spy ring, the Pentagon's counterspying unit, known as CIFA, warned that Muslim soldiers might have divided loyalties.
What did the Pentagon do? It built a mosque for them at Marine headquarters in Quantico, Va.
The Defense Intelligence Agency also warned the Pentagon that Muslim soldiers might have divided loyalties after a Muslim sergeant fragged superior officers in Kuwait just before the Iraq invasion.
What did the Pentagon do? It recruited more of them, promising them leave for Ramadan and other Muslim holidays.
After the Muslim activist who created the Pentagon's Muslim chaplain corps was convicted of plotting terrorism, the inspector general and some members of Congress suggested that the Pentagon review all the Muslim chaplains the man had sponsored.
The Terrorist-Certified Chaplains Who Minister To Muslim Soldiers

Lost in all the coverage of accused Islamic terrorist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's penetration of the military's officer corps is a deeper problem within the military — its radical Muslim chaplain corps.
One of the groups the Pentagon turns to for clerics to minister to its growing ranks of Muslim soldiers is the American Muslim Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs Council. The group was founded by presumed "moderate" Muslim leader Abdurahman Alamoudi, who described his endeavor as "an excellent opportunity to show my community we have people who are patriotic."
This flag-waving patriot turned out to be one of al-Qaida's top fundraisers in the U.S., and is now serving 23 years in federal prison.
"Alamoudi placed chaplains throughout our military," said Rep. Sue Myrick, a Republican member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. "He's now in jail, (but) the chaplains are still in their current positions."
Alamoudi's group sponsored Army Muslim chaplain Yousef Yee, the formerly accused spy who ministered to more than 600 detainees at Gitmo, many of whom have been released only to return to violent jihad.
Alamoudi, who was given power of attorney by several Gitmo detainees, even persuaded the Pentagon to let an al-Qaida-tied Saudi charity fly planeloads of Muslim-American soldiers to Mecca.
The Pentagon's other official endorser of Muslim chaplains is the Islamic Society of North America, or ISNA, which the Justice Department recently blacklisted as an unindicted terrorist co-conspirator.
These two radical groups accredit chaplains trained chiefly by the Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences, which is run by a radical imam also recently named an unindicted terrorist co-conspirator. After Northern Virginia-based GSISS was raided by federal agents after 9/11, the imam changed its name to Cordoba University.
It's still churning out Muslim chaplains. In fact, 10 of the 14 Muslim chaplains serving in the military graduated from GSISS — including Navy Lt. Cmdr. Abuhena Saifulislam, who was handed the keys to the new Quantico mosque.
Saifulislam (Arabic for "Sword of Islam") ministered to Marine Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun before he deserted his Iraq unit, citing disapproval of the war as a Muslim. Hassoun has been charged with desertion and larceny.
Another GSISS alumnus — Army Capt. Mohammed Khan — was Sgt. Hasan Akbar's chaplain. Akbar is the Muslim traitor who fragged fellow soldiers on the eve of the 101st Airborne's push into Iraq. Akbar's grenade and rifle attack killed two soldiers and wounded 14, taking out of action key personnel in charge of planning troop movements.
The military's Muslim chaplains are backed up by more than 100 lay leaders. Most of them have been trained by the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in America, which is part of Saudi Arabia's state-run university system.
One of the institute's former trainers happens to be Hasan's mentor — the radical cleric Anwar Awlaki, who met privately with the hijackers and who U.S. intelligence now believes to be a top al-Qaida recruiter. Awlaki worked for the Saudi Embassy as both lecturer and hajj tour guide while leading prayers at a Washington-area mosque attended by Hasan and the hijackers.
Hasan himself acted as a lay leader at Fort Hood in the absence of a Muslim chaplain, Maj. Khalid Shabbaz, who transferred from the post just before the massacre. Shabazz's previous stint was at Gitmo, where he was seen by guards as sympathetic to al-Qaida prisoners.
It's not known if Hasan radicalized any of Fort Hood's 165 Muslim soldiers. But investigators are looking closely at one of his proteges, Duane Reasoner. A substitute teacher whose parents worked at the base, he was converted to Islam by Hasan. Of the massacre victims, Reasoner said: "In the end, they were troops who were going to Afghanistan and Iraq to kill Muslims. I honestly have no pity for them."
Lest any soldiers at Fort Hood adopt Hasan's thinking, the Army has dispatched Muslim chaplain Maj. Dawud Agbere from Fort Leavenworth to counsel them. Where'd Agbere get his Islamic training? The radical GSISS.
Extremism isn't confined to Fort Hood. At North Carolina's Fort Bragg, home of the Airborne and Special Operations Forces, the post chaplain — who happens to be the same Muslim preacher who counseled Akbar — runs a Shariah-compliant mosque with a separate back entrance for "sisters." Only men can enter through the main doors.
Are chaplains and lay leaders counseling Muslim soldiers to secretly support jihad? Are they helping mold extremist views? Brass haven't the foggiest. They refuse to even question them and their religious accrediting bodies, claiming it would be "legally problematic" under constitutional rules separating church and state.
Meanwhile, they're hosting Iftar dinners for them at the Pentagon, site of the worst Islamic terror in history. This year's Ramadan celebration — held just weeks before Hasan's alleged rampage — was the largest ever, drawing an overflow crowd of some 200 Muslims.
Who organized the event? Zadil Ansari, the Pentagon's own Muslim prayer leader — who happens to be a protege of Alamoudi, the al-Qaida terrorist. Ansari is tied to the radical Saudi institute that trained as many as 100 of the military's lay leaders.
The Islamist penetration of the Pentagon doesn't stop there.
Penetration Even At The Pentagon: Muslim Spies Setting Muslim Policy
By PAUL SPERRY
Posted 12/17/2009 07:34 PM ET ( part 3)
The internal threat from Muslim extremists in the military extends to high-level Defense Department aides who have undermined military policy. In fact, one top Muslim adviser pushed out an intelligence analyst who warned of the sudden jihad syndrome that led to the Fort Hood terrorist attack.
An honored guest of the Ramadan dinner at the Pentagon this September was Hesham Islam, who infiltrated the highest echelons of the Ring despite proven ties to U.S. terror front groups and a shady past in his native Egypt.
As senior adviser for international affairs to former deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England, Islam ran interference for the Islamic Society of North America and other radical fronts for the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood, the subject of my new book "Muslim Mafia."
For example, Islam persuaded brass to sack a Pentagon analyst, Stephen Coughlin, after he advised cutting off outreach to ISNA, which he accurately ID'd as part of a covert terror-support network in the U.S. — something the Justice Department recently confirmed in a major terror finance trial.
Islam invited ISNA officials to lunch with the avuncular England, known by insiders as Gullible Gordon, who in turn spoke at ISNA confabs. Islam also helped set up a Pentagon job booth at one recent ISNA convention to recruit Muslim chaplains and linguists.
Most disturbing, Islam met regularly with Saudi and other embassy officials lobbying for the release and repatriation of their citizens held at Gitmo. He in turn advised England, who authorized the release of dozens of Gitmo detainees. Some have resumed terrorist activities.
No one really knew who Islam was when he was promoted — in fact, the Pentagon removed his bio from its Web site after reporters noted major inconsistencies in it — yet he was allowed to get inside the office of the Pentagon's No. 2 official.
"In effect," a senior U.S. Army intelligence official told me, "we've got terrorist supporters calling the shots on our policies toward Muslims from the highest levels."
Meanwhile, politically incorrect prophets like Coughlin have been frozen out. After the betrayal at Fort Hood, the military could use his analysis of Islamic doctrine more than ever.
I attended a private briefing by Coughlin in February. In a PowerPoint presentation, he detailed how jihadists use the Quran to justify their actions. Some of his slides matched almost word-for-word Hasan's own PowerPoint slides extolling the virtues of jihad and martyrdom. Both, for instance, quoted from the same Quranic passage known as the "Verse of the Sword."
Eerily, Coughlin predicted Hasan's mind-set. He first began briefing the Pentagon on this jihadist doctrine in 2002. So brass can't say they didn't know.
They were warned that the enemy was drawing on religious principles, and that our own Muslim soldiers could succumb to such thinking.
And they were warned that by using ISNA and other radical Brotherhood fronts to endorse Muslim chaplains and recruit Muslim soldiers, they were courting enemies of the U.S. — and courting disaster. But they were too drunk with political correctness to listen.
The jihadist threat to U.S.-based armed forces is external as well as internal — and far greater than reported. It comes from both inside and outside the military.
Fort Hood follows in a line of attacks or plots against military personnel and installations since 2006, when al-Qaida spokesman Adam Gadahn, an American convert to Islam, appeared in a video with Osama bin Laden and encouraged fellow Muslim-Americans to "go on a shooting spree at the Marines' housing facilities at Camp Pendleton" in California.
Over the past few years, an alarming number of homegrown Muslim terrorists have targeted military installations, including:
• A North Carolina cell of white converts to Islam who trained to attack Marine headquarters in Quantico, Va.
• A New York cell of black jailhouse converts who planned to down planes at an Air National Guard base with shoulder-fired missiles.
• A lone Muslim convert who shot two soldiers at a Little Rock, Ark., Army recruiting station, killing one.
• A Los Angeles cell of black Muslim converts who plotted to hit military bases in California.
• A New Jersey cell of hardened jihadists who trained to attack Fort Dix by posing as pizza delivery drivers.
The Fort Dix terrorists had also talked about joining the U.S. Army so they could kill U.S soldiers from the "inside." They planned to hit the post just days after a National Guard unit arrived back from Gitmo. Some of them were inspired by al-Qaida preacher Anwar Awlaki, who on his Yemen-based Web site calls for jihad against U.S. military targets inside and outside the U.S.
But so do so-called moderate American clerics like Zaid Shakir. In "Muslim Mafia," I transcribe for readers a CD recording of one of his sermons circulating in mosques across America. In it, he exhorts the Muslim faithful to attack planes carrying the 82nd Airborne.
Frequently booked by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as a guest speaker at its events, Shakir tells his Muslim audience: "Jihad is physically fighting the enemies of Islam to protect and advance the religion of Islam. This is jihad."
Acceptable targets of jihad, he says, include U.S. military aircraft. "Islam doesn't permit us to hijack airplanes filled with civilian people," he said, but "if you hijack an airplane filled with the 82nd Airborne, that's something else."
The 82nd Airborne is based out of Fort Bragg, which is part of North Carolina state Sen. Larry Shaw's home district. Shaw is CAIR's new chairman. He is also a minority contractor who operates Shaw Food Services Co. near Fort Bragg. According to the legislator's financial disclosure form, Shaw Food customers include the Defense Department.
Yet CAIR, like ISNA, is an unindicted terrorist co-conspirator. The FBI says CAIR is a terrorist front group and has cut off formal ties to it. So should the military.
Will Fort Bragg be next? Does anybody care?
This enemy is hiding behind a religion, making it easier for them to infiltrate our sensitive security agencies. Communist spooks did not have such an advantage.
As the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq drag on, and as long as our troops are deployed in those Muslim countries, our troops stationed here will increasingly be targeted by homegrown jihadists.
To protect them, military command must stop currying favor with suspect Muslim groups and start beefing up counterintelligence activities. It must institute a policy of zero tolerance for Jihad Joes in the ranks.
At Fort Hood, the military's PC mind-set led to a horrific failure in intelligence and force protection. Commanders missed clear signs that an Islamic fanatic harboring deep-seated resentment against the U.S. had infiltrated their officer corps. They were too busy trying to win Muslim "hearts and minds." We saw how well that worked on Hasan.
If Fort Hood did not open their eyes, snap them out of their PC slumber, nothing will. Our brave men and women in uniform already have to worry about getting ambushed in Iraq and Afghanistan. They shouldn't have to worry about getting ambushed at home.
One unnamed Army chaplain confided to McClatchy Newspapers that more than a few Muslims are conflicted about honoring their duty while fighting other Muslims. What other Muslim soldiers are betraying their oath, betraying their security clearance, betraying their country?
While there is rightly placed concern that we not label all Muslims as Islamic terrorists or enemy sympathizers, it is entirely proper to address certain aspects of violence as uniquely Islamic. After all, our enemies cite the sources of Islam as the foundation of their global jihad.
By ignoring this demonstrably obvious fact, the military is violating the first rule of war: Know thy enemy and what motivates it. That's a recipe for defeat.
