.38 Safety Fourth Model. Some 104,000 were made from 1898-1907, serial range 116003 to about 220000. The Safety models were also called the "New Departure" (by S&W) and "lemon squeezers" (by about everybody else).

With so many of that model made, value is generally low, but I would put that jewel at easily $600, maybe $800+ due to the long barrel and the grips, which I have little doubt are genuine mother-of-pearl.

Real mother of pearl is transcendent, I have one set on a .45 that appears as if you could dip your finger in the surface. MOP is a thing of beauty, but fragile and getting more and more expensive every day.

Re: S&W top break

real MOP is also heavyer ,and it doesn't smell like burned nylon ,
John thanks bro ,spent some time last week watching your video's
excellent shooting , my friend

reinhard. thank you. if only i could shoot as good on camera as i do when by myself id be wowing folks. kinda odd how that works... soon as someone's watching you start messing up.

That's better than I do; I don't need anyone watching to mess up.
