hello,does anybody know what this gun is? it looks as if it has been sleved. is this a civil war gun? thanks david

To start with, it's Belgian and, yes, it has been sleeved. Looks like it's been sleeved quite smaller. Roughly, what is the bore diameter?
As for being Civil War, who knows? Could be, as there were a great many European muskets imported by both the North and the South.
Are there any sign of sling swivels? How about a picture of the whole rifle?

:)Sure, I know what it is:), It is an old percussion black powder pistol made in Belgium. Other than that, haven't the foggiest. There are no known records for these old guns and Belgium supplied firearms to the world. Yours was made maybe 1840's t0 1880's, yes, it does look like it has been sleeved, don't know why or by who. It may have been done to repair a very corroded barrel and may even be a modern repair. Again there is no way to tell. Civil war?, I doubt it, but who knows, they used a vast number of different firearms in the Civil War?. Is it any type of issued military firearm? No. Sorry, with out some documentation it is just a very old black powder pistol that is in very bad condition. In the condition it is in value is 50 to 75 dollars as a wall decoration.Added: Rifle, yes now that I've re looked at the fuzzy pictures it may very well be a rifle. same information applies through.

is that sling mount a exact 2" ( preeety close) from the woods end ?

2" was the designated measurement at the time but not solely used

but helps point at military if so ..

and how does the insert mount look ? polished or filed ?

filed increases the chances of it being a "rushed into service " rifle

polished could be anything

and yes your photography is as good as mine ...

the flat mount for the sling the dual hole and position point it towards being a possible military weapon.. but without more info it is hard to say

the pic above (last one) would help a bit if in focus ..

also the area that looks like its missing a band that would be a good area to inspect for workmanship or alterations that may indicate military usage

Looks like you have a Belgium contract musket. The proof mark is the 1810 black powder proof, which dosen't mean a darn thing other than Belgium.

Sorry but I gota say its in sad shape and not worth a lot unless there is some history behind it and even so it may not be worth much.

So what you have is a wall hanger .
