Re: Springfield rifles in the 1890s, case hardening

Thanks Jim.
I now wonder if it is the case hardening I am seeing in this picture, or if it is a blued refinish. It is on the cover of Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms.

Re: Springfield rifles in the 1890s, case hardening

“The finish on the Krag, Enfield and 1903 is the same.” – jack404

That took me by surprise. I guess I have never seen the Enfield or ’03 in as like new a condition and the color must have faded. ...

Springfield rifles in the 1890s, case hardening

I have seen a photo of a Krag carbine museum piece in nearly new condition. I like the color of the receiver. It is case hardened in blue & black, but the blue is dark. All other case hardening I...

I really need to start shooting better before I laugh at others, but, Bench resting has always seemed an abomination to me. I like the true positions.

There is an interesting interview...

Re: Greenhill or Miller?

I did Dan’s recommendations on his Q&A page. Thanks LD.

I already knew that bullet stability is measured in rpm, what I am asking is which calculator best expressed how much rpm we need.

How do you know?
That is what it calculates to. But what I am asking is: Does anyone challenge this black powder era calculator to see if it is asking for more twist than smokeless velocity bullets...

Re: Who sells the CH Champion press?

LDBennett, Thank you for the report on the quality of the CH company. They sound like a good outfit, if a little undermanned for the amount of work they are asked to do.

Re: Stevens Model 12 MARKSMAN

Thank you Jack.
I have seen a shotgun version that used the 44-40 Winchester cartridge loaded as a shotshell. This leads me to wonder if they were also built as 44-40 rifles.
