I had a S&W 22A that wouldnt fire the second round out of either mag. The scary part is that the second round would not go all the way into battery but the weapon would still drop the hammer. IDK...

Your stated price range is 300-500 gun and scope. The stevens is gonna be @ the 300 range. I just did a search on Graf ans sons and found a LEUPOLD 3-9x40mm VX-I GLOSS DUPLEX for 229. Probly not...

30-06 will be pretty easy to find for the most part. 7.62X39 is back in the local stores stacked pretty deep so I wouldnt worry about finding 06 ammo.

This is after a few minutes of Zip-Strip.
I let it work for about ten minutes and then rubbed it off with fine steel wool.
It came off really easy.

Im in the process of refinishing the stock and buttplate.
Gonna let the stock dry out over night and then do the boiled linseed oil. the paint came right off the buttplate and is back to what looks...

It has a P behind the trigger on the stock that I can see. I am in the process of removing the old finish and am going to rub the linseed oil in when I finish. I will post more pics when I finish.....
