Check the chamber for a deep notch where the firing pin hits. Possibly the 'peening' had been repaired improperly.
Also check the firing pin for a broken tip.

The rifle was also chambered for the .22 Hornet, .223, 222 which sported a 24" barrel with a Monte Carlo Style stock.
The .30/30 sported a 22" barrel.
