Re: Simple Question

Interesting. The guys at the range suggested windex to clean it. Seems to be working fine so far. I like the idea of using hot soapy water better. Might try that next time.

Thanks!

Re: First time at the Range!

Gat,

Thanks for the good advice...several things in there I hadn't thought of. I'm definitely loading the powder and the wad in one step, the going back and loading all of the balls. I hadn't...

Re: Butter or no butter

The person that suggested skipping the butter also suggested Wonder Wads. Looks like thats the plan from now on! Really glad to hear that. I hated the mess that goes along with buttering the...

Butter or no butter

I was recently told that if I put the wad on top of the powder, then the ball, I don't have to "butter" the end of the cylinder. Is that true? I've been putting powder..wad..ball..butter, then...

Re: I joined the Club..Literally!

according to the owners, the ventalation will be strong enough that you will actually feel a breeze at your back when your shooting. Now it just needs to open.

Re: I joined the Club..Literally!

I double checked before I signed up...three owners said it wouldnt be a problem.

And its funny that my "Rusty Car" was getting more curious people coming over and asking about it than the shiny...

I joined the Club..Literally!

There is a new shooting range opening up in March about a mile from my house. Its an indoor range (great for summer in Tx). The best part is that they were offering charter memberships for $100.00....

Re: First time at the Range!

The pellets wouldn't ignite. I had to pop 5-6 caps on them to get them to fire. We were getting ready to pull the nipples and force the pellets and ball out. I just kept popping caps, and they would...

First time at the Range!

Just got back from the firing range, and had a blast (no pun intended). The guy who owns the shooting range said he shoots black powder, and gave me a few tips on shooting. It was all good...

Re: How do you carry at the range

Cool. So it sounds like a case is the way to go then.

Where would the typical BP shooter use a holster if not at the range?

Re: How do you carry at the range

So if the holsters are not for the range, when would you wear a holster (BP)? Maybe a Civil War reinactment? I can't image that many people are strolling around with them on their hips in every day...

Re: How do you carry at the range

is it uncommon for a range to allow/encourage you to carry while you shoot?

First... Semper Fi :-)

Second
I only have the one gun, and am very much the novice. Eventually I could like to get my conceal and carry lisc, but until then I will be more than satisfied with my...

Re: Cleaning 1851 Navy

So, as long as I lock the ramrod all the way down (to eliminate air spaces) and use crisco (or something similiar) to prevent chain fires, I should be fine. Cool. Makes me feel better.

As far as...

Re: How do you carry at the range

That makes sense. I'd love to have a holster for it, but if its just going to hang on the wall, and I'm not going to actually wear it...I'd rather not spend the money on it.

Thanks guys!

How do you carry at the range

I've done a little research on the site, and can't find much on how most people carry at the range. I know if I had a modern pistol instead of a BP, I could use a holster without anyone wondering...

Re: Cleaning 1851 Navy

Also, under the barrel...on the ram rod, if it were a rifle (not sure what its called on a pistol)..there is a fair amount of oil, and some on the body of the gun. Should I clean it off as well, or...

Re: Cleaning 1851 Navy

Its really that easy?

How easy is it to mess it up? I've watched a video on Cabella's website showing how to load it, and it seems pretty straight forward. I would think that if you mess it up,...

Cleaning 1851 Navy

I get the impression that Pyrodex is much easier to clean than BP. Thoughts?

Re: 1851 navy 44

I got the same gun for Christmas, and I'm in the same boat. Lots of questions, and ready to go shooting. But not really excited about the "trial and error" approach. :0)
