Re: which bp rifle to buy?

This brings up another legal technicality. Primer ignition is not legal for deer hunting in some states. Better check with your's if you plan to use a gun of this type.

Re: Need HELP on an antique gun recently aquired!!!

The "WARR" is "WARRANTED", which simply means guaranteed. The name "Partridge" is not uncommon on gunlocks of the period. This is NOT the gun maker, but rather the lock maker or supplier. Most...

Re: what does everybody think is the best caliber for self defense

For all around self-defense purposes? A 1911 pattern .45 ACP, without doubt! For a "night stand in the bedroom" gun? A .44 magnum is hard to beat.

Re: which bp rifle to buy?

Sorry John, I stand corrected! I had not yet looked at this season's deer hunting regulations. It would not have been legal previously. Illinois' firearms deer hunting regulations are constantly...

Re: Hawkens style Muzzle loader with double set triggers

Iceman....you are quite right! I have owned both a Thompson-Center Arms "Hawken" and a Lyman "Great Plains Rifle". The Lyman has the basic look and feel of the real thing (And I have handled plenty...

Re: which bp rifle to buy?

For those of you who think you need an inline with a black powder substitute in order to successfully hunt deer, or that "bigger is better", I thought I might show you this. This seven point buck was...

Re: Shelf Life Of Blackpowder

Quite right! Black powder will keep pretty much forever. It does not break down like smokeless powders. I have tried black powder from horns that were well over 100 years old....works fine! And yes,...

Re: handgun hunting

I just got another deer with the Contender last weekend. This time I used the .357 magnum barrel. Why? Because it has a "red-dot" scope that works well in low light. The .44 mag barrel has a 2X ...

Re: which bp rifle to buy?

I don't know about where you live, but a muzzle-loading firearm using smokeless powder would NOT be legal for hunting deer in Illinois. It is, by definition, no longer a black powder firearm.

Re: Best ammo/powder

You need to be able to experiment with different loads to see what is most accurate for your rifle. That's pretty hard to do with Pyrodex pellets. Buy yourself some real black powder, much better...

Re: Old black powder rifle info needed

Re: handgun hunting

I have always hunted deer with a muzzle-loading rifle, and quite successfully I might add. But Illinois recently made handguns legal during firearms deer season so I had to try it. I have a Contender...

Re: which bp rifle to buy?

Personally, I much prefer tradional guns, either sidelock or underhammer. Yes, underhammers are traditional and will provide ignition every bit as good as an inline. But if you believe you must have...

!860 Army Colt

Pretty nice original 1860 Army Colt! The condition appears to be about average. A significant Civil War revolver, and among the nicest "feeling" handguns of all time (in my hand at least).
