How does the 6-1/2 inch shoot? I suspect the barrel length should help with managing it.

Probably because the 44 mag is higher in popularity.
Even though the 44 Special uses less powder and is less power, less supply of those.
If you get into reloading, you can reload 44 mag rounds...

Anything less needs a special license or its illegal.

Got the 24 lbs of 10B101 aka Herco in and loaded up 100 rounds of 44 mag.
Using 10 grains for a 240 gr LSWC.
Hopefully I can try them out this coming weekend and report the results.

I would go with a 44 Mag version if its in your $$ range.
Reason being, you could always shoot 44 special loads in there for HD
Only a little more cleanup involved in the cylinder when shooting...

I went ahead and ordered 4 jugs of the 10B101 pull-down powder from gibrass.com
Total with shipping and hazmat came out to $150 for 24 lbs = $6.25 a lb!
44 Mag -- 11 GR Herco for 180...

Stock fore-end and Butt-stock were not in good shape
Barrel was in TERRIBLE shape - rusted and pitted, receiver not to great either...
