The reason those conversion kits are no longer available is the fact too many of them blew up.
But there are some folks that have had SOME success with conversions (check over at rimfire central).

My Garand seems to like 44.5g of H4895 with a 168g SMK.
I started with 41g and worked up, went up to 45.5 then backed it down.
Just work your loads til you find one that works in your rifle.

Check the volume of each variety by filling them with water then weighing the water.
Most commercial brass is relatively close in specs to each other, surplus...

Wal-mart, Academy, Gander Mountain, Cabela's, Bass Pro, local Toy pusher, any kid on a street corner, etc.
They are not hard to find. And with the mail-in rebate, they're pretty cheap.
