I had a 7600, basically the same rifle in 308 Rem. It's the only rifle I ever regretted selling. Get it repaired and I think you will like it. Or if you're thinking tactical, to go with the 10 round...

I've seen some holster designs that seem designed to have the stap released by the trigger finger. I have a Bianchi X-15 shoulder holster for my 1911 that works very well when used this way.

I would put that in the 308 or 30-06 category, moderately flat shooting all around cartridges. Not what I would consider a "woods" type cartridge with a blunt tip.

I would go with a heavier weight soft point bonded bullet, I don't think a hollow point would perform very well on a large animal like that aside from the legallity of using it.
