yep 10/22 good first gun probably the best if you got the money, if not buy a single/bolt for $50.
note that when you buy a Ruger you are getting what you pay for.

yes I agree whole heartedly even in the US with a much larger sporting goods market and freer laws.

yep check chamber, crown, see if barrel is straight the latter may be difficult with tapered barrels.
I would keep it in the family at least it is a much "easier" trainer than a bolt, some 22 bolts...

I had one of the newer models savage mk2 it was incredibly cheap and not very reliable but very accurate.
they have a very good and kinda special trigger you will like that part.

Ruger all the way you can do anything with them yeah they cost more but they are worth it.
Personally mine is tacced out and set for fast 100yd sub moa shooting, or home defense.
