I know this is an old thread but the "The Bukmarks and Rugers are widely seen with beginners" comment aught my attention. I've never tried the Buckmark or the Smith, but I do know I got a 1" group...

my best group with a 14" T/C Contender Pistol on sand bags with Factory open sights shooting factory 30-30 ammo I got a 5" group at 100 yards, 10 shot group.

My .22LR Ruger MKII Target Pistol with 5-1/2" BullBarrel with 7x Scope mounted, Zero at 50 gives me zero at 25 also, 35 yards is about 1.5" high, and about 8" below zero at 100 yards.
