If you do anything at all, just wipe it down. Unless the finish is totaly gone I wouldn't touch it. And if it is gone, there is a certain way to refinish the stock without ruining the rifle's...

Here ya go, a 24 stock, no hand guard. Check this site, it also has hand guards. I'm not sure what you want to do, but a 24/47 is a fine rifle the way it is. After a 98K comes a 24/47, then an M48....
