It does not have to be a side mount . You can use a pistol scope that has a long eye relief and mount it out on the barrel and not on the side of the receiver.

If it is not in excellent condition you can send it back to Leupold and they will recondition is for a very small fee. The last one that I sent in was a 3X9 vari X 2 and it cost me 10 bucks.

If you live in flat country with windy conditions a lot. I suggest the 25-06. The 87 grain bullet bucks wind with the best of them and has about the same recoil as the 22-250.
