Go with either an ar15 .22 conversion or a knock off, or get a bolt or lever .22 to learn with and then i suppose if you had the money could step up to a .223 ar15 or saiga, depending on your...

i'm probably going to get the leveraction scope from cabelas and start using the leverevolution ammo, but i'm not sure if i want to put a scope on, considering most shots are 50yds or less

my 597 trade
I have a remington 597 and am tired of shoving rounds into the spring and want to get a new .22 with tube feed. i preferably want a semi auto but i will look into henrys depending on price. my 597...

good luck finding a bolt, but more deer have been killed by a .30-30 than any other caliber. I'm going to have to recommend you get a marlin 336. but if you must have your bolt, like i said, tikka...

My Remington597 isn't necessarily the best, but I'm not really in the mood to get a new .22 since mine is only like 3 or 4 years old, but if i was, ya'll have pretty much got me sold on the marlin 60.

my concern with the cheaper scopes is will they absorb enough light for later shots? i have had to let many deer go because of not enough light for my iron sights

you need a slug barrel for slugs, as for steel shot, i think you might be able to as it is but you might need a special choke for it

I don't have one of their .22's, but marlin makes a good lever action .30-30, so i don't see why their .22's wouldn't perform well.

Well, i was pretty much sold on getting the mossberg, so i went to bass pro's hunting classic yesterday and they didn't have the 500, so the guy had me hold a 535 and i loved it, but it was $100 more...
