Re: Kimber or Springfield ,for my 1st 1911?
Make a list of features you want on your pistol. Then price a pistol that is close to it with add ons.
I think you will find a package from Kimber will fit your needs or wants.

I have heard that only KImber sights will fit their guns without modifing the sight slightly. Or a sight made just for Kimbers.
I returned my slide to Kimber to change out some dim night sights....

Re: Kimber choice...
The KImber pro hd is all steel I believe. It has the 4" barrel as is very accurate. 2"-3" groups ay 25 yards. If you are shooting competion get the 5" target.

Re: Recommendations wanted
I have the KImber Compact and am really pleased with the gun. I have read on the forums that the 3" barrell guns can take some work. The 4" seam to work better without any tweaking.

Re: I have $650 to buy a 1911
I would like to here more on the loaded springfield too.
Look for a KImber custom or a Kimber compact (series 1 if you can even used) they are awesome guns for the price,
