I carry a .44 spl Bulldog (first generation). The recoil is very manageable and the bullet is larger than a .38/357.
But then my husband didn't believe a woman should be limited to "only" .22...

Gun stores that sold Black powder had to have a special place to store BP. Gorex, Pyrodex didn't need this.
