I have a e-mail friend who was a BC of a zippo monitor. We worked with zippos on occasion-very effective weapon.
I spent the middle part of my tour on operation giant sling shot on the Vam Co Dong river until ATC 36 was sunk Jan 21 1970. Mostly night ops with occsional mission of hauling and supporting 25th Infantry undermanned units to the Cambodian Border- or blocking stations on the river while we watched the APC's during a night battle slug it out with Bunkered NVA in french rubber plantation. My coxswain latter killed Jan 21 liked to sit on the flight deck an route for the "home" team like a football game. A big greek kid from Texas. Me I went below decks and squated in my gun turret after watching for a bit. From what I saw noone "won" it was a seesaw battle till heavy arty and flareships worked over the NVA bunker line that the APC's were trying to over run. No NVA tried to cross our part of the river THAT nite.
