Matthew 22:31-32: And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.”
That's one thing I think about when I hear people asking the public to pray for those who died in some disaster or other. As you say, if they are dead, whether saint or sinner, they are beyond the reach of prayers. The time to pray for them is while they are alive. We can thank God for their lives and work and other things after they are dead.
