You ain't in the military. Shooting at what you can't see (ie, behind "cover") is a good way to run out of ammo. If the enemy has cover, YOU better have cover. If you don't have any cover, you screwed up. You don't have to take or hold any ground. you aint got choppers or APC's to haul you around. You have no supply lines. You have to forage, and you have to hump everything on your back. That means you can carry half as much 30 cal ammo as 223 ammo. The shorty 223 lets you have an efficient sound suppressor and a gun that is still swift and light to handle. Not having all that blast and flash is a tremendous advantage for the survivalist.
