The fact is that the troops miss with 10,000+ rds for every hit that they get, and most of their hits are poor ones. That missing mostly occurs at 100 yds and less, with a lot of it happening at 50 yds and less. A lot of good it does to make the guys stagger along with twice as much gun and ammo wt, or have them carry have as many rds.
I know Dick Culver, and I know the realities of combat. Nobody, and I mean nobody, can do better than luck (ie, 50% hits for shots fired) on dodging, cover using men at more than 200 yds, even in good light, have earmuffs, and are just competing. When they have no ear protection and are being fired upon, they miss even more at 100 yds. The military has known this for decades, now, which is why they don't consider any rifle to amount to a hoot, nor bother with much rifle training. The rifle accounts for at most 10% of casulties, and it has not done more since before WWI. The fragmentation weapons are where it's at.
