Re: We are a REPUBLIC, NOT A DEMOCRACY.....
i agree with the deputy, but i posit that it is more of a congruence of good government coupled with self restraint. there is an excellent arguement in a book called the lost books of adam and eve ,i think it is also in the book of virtues, where two greek philosophers, argue opposing points, one man who lives not taking care of his wine barrel, but living it up, the other man taking good care of his barrel. the classic arguement of Hedonism versus stoicism. Lets just say the stoic whups the hedon's butt. i will try to find and post later. though no religion is mentioned in the debate, i'm sure both were aware of the jewish religion of the time. Also it is fair to say that people who practice even a learned if not heartfelt judaeo/christian ethic, are more likely to gravitate to the restraint of the wants and the "flesh" and look to the 'Spirit" or the future. so repulblic is better gov than democracy allways, even without a religious people, as long as the majority of the people practice a social and privately learned "law of God and man" as it were. Democracy allways tends to end up in the i want , here and now, category. I would even go with Ayn Rand Philosphy here , alittle bit , the virtue of Selfishness. it is good to excersize, it benefits your body to live longer and with less health problems. I t si good to save money now, you will have more when you are older. The government should not tax or regulate, you , therefore, if you want social programs, then you are free to start or to donate to any of them you want , or volunteer, your choice, and you will have money to spend in ways the governmetnt cannot spend or target, etc.
We keep going to Nationalizing this or that in this country, it is allways a mistake. Calvin Coolidge said ti best, once you start a new gov program the prgram never goes away, it allwasy spends more money, it helps, few if any of the poeple it purports to help, and it is very inneficient, resulting in the beaurocracy becoming now worse than the initial problem. I paraphrased that. we must also remember that Churchill said, Democracy is the worst form of government there is, but it is better than all the rest! So we msut allwasy call are Reps and Senators and remind them to push back against Federalizing thsi nationalizing that, etc.
