Actually, the M-16 does work if it is used the way Eugene Stoner designed it to be used. Weather or not it works better than the M-14 is another question. At close range, it is meant to be used as a sub machine gun and as a rifle at extended ranges. If you hit the enemy at 100 yards or more, who cares if he can run an extra hundred feet or more before he finally drops? At close range, you hit him with a full auto burst. Thre of more rounds of .223 will do the job. There is a case where a guy used a Ruger AC-14 on an attacker who was built like Paul Tauttle SR. The attacker shouted "F%^*K your machine gun! I'm going to kill you!" He then hit him with a 5 round burst and put him down instanly.
In the words of Jeff Cooper. "It has been said that with a .223 you can carry more ammo. You will also need more ammo to do the same job."
