You know, Wolery, maybe there's a perfectly logical solution to your problem here, and one that won't violate established history. Why not forget about the .45 ACP and instead go with a .357 Magnum revolver? The .357 came out commercially around 1935, so it would not be anachronistic in the 1940s.
