I have the impression that the more Catholic a state, the more rabid it is about gun control. E.g., California, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Mass. and Maryland as opposed to Virginia, S.C., Alabama, and Georgia.

I think the religious aspects are a bit of a coincidence... What I blame in the disparity of gun control laws between the states is the Labor Union movement. The Democrats support the Unions, and the Unions often encourage their membership to vote Democrat 'so that they can keep their jobs'. After all, those Republicans don't want anyone to work... Umm, yeah...
Following the Labor Union's lead, supporters and members vote for the Democrat official. The problem is that Democrats have evolved into an ultra-leftist group where there are few, if any, Conservatives left to be found. The Labor Union voters are voting to preserve their livelihoods, in their minds. Some of them ignore the bad aspects of the Democrat they helped elect, while others take a more bandwagon sports type attitude and learn to like the ideals of the person they voted for... It all goes back to folks feeling a need to put food on the table more than any other ideal they may hold dear. Right-to-work states allow employers to fire employees for any reason, as long as it's not discriminatory. That cramps the Unions' style a bit, and often kills all Union affiliations in those states. Non-right-to-work states, and particularly closed-shop states cause Unions to thrive. In close-shop situations, you MUST be a member of the Union to work on the job. A worker develops a deep connection with the Union and the Democrat candidate that the Union is telling them to vote for...
I'll end with these three maps...
