The standard boxes have the key pad on the top and the hinge is on the bottom. So yes, if you set it on the counter and hit the combo the doors falls open.

I'm talking about mounting it upside down. This would cause the hinge to be at the top and the door would just dangle in the way.

I think I found a good solution, the bioprint boxes. These use one fingerprint sensor to gain access. I can mount this with a small gap between the bed and the top of the box, allowing me enough clearance to get my thumb on the reader. Then the door opens down as designed and I have full access.

Has anyone used one of these?

I especially like it because it allows to save up to 16 prints for access. So my wife and I can both have access, but my daughter cannot accidentally hit the right combo and get to the gun.
