Technically, it will carry further than that, but beyond 300 yards--and that is really stretching it--the 55-62 grain bullet of the 5.56 just doesn't have enough "poop" to be reliably effective against human targets. I think we must keep in mind that the 5.56 is highly velocity dependent for its effectiveness. At very long ranges, when the velocity drops below about 2700 fps, the bullet loses its ability to fragment, and thus much of its potential to destroy tissue is lost.
