Not a dumb question at all Shimon, the Car 15
is your M16 short. Collapsible stock, short barrel and fixed carry handle. It seems, and someone's going to correct me here, to have become the M4 when adopted as a first line rifle, complete with flat top receiver by the Yanks.
It seems to have gone M16, M16A1 (with forward assist, why not just add a bolt handle) then Car15, (with a couple of shorts in between, one with a huge flash hider). The M4. There are folk reading this who know way more than I do here.
