Several years ago I bought a rifled barrel for my Mossberg 500, and I couldn't resist the temptation to try some shot loads through the thing.
The patterns were about four times wider than the patterns from a smoothbore barrel - roughly one foot wide at a distance of ten feet, compared with 2 or 3 inches wide for a smoothbore slug barrel.
It occurred to me that this might be useful for home defense scenarios.
