I had an old Stevens 311A 20 Gauge that was in terrible shape
Stock fore-end and Butt-stock were not in good shape
Barrel was in TERRIBLE shape - rusted and pitted, receiver not to great either
Steel-wooled it out as best as I could then used some high-heat black paint
to re-paint everything and cover up almost all the rust
Before I did that, I chopped the barrel - chopped the butt-stock
BUT - kept everything above legal limits!
Also put on a picatinny rail and AR pistol grip (was only $12-ish online!)
It has almost NO kick now, shoots great, and I can shoot both barrels at once
and there is almost no recoil at all - will work great for the women family members!
