Good point Zhurh, and this is a lot more appropriate than many people might think right off the bat...
Burying food below the frost line when you're in Northern Freakin Coldistan like Z is, makes a LOT of sense.
what you need to think about too is that if you're in Arizona, Nevada, Kommiefornia, Texas, etc etc etc...
You can get the EXACT SAME BENEFICIAL effect... lots of people dont realize that it's 100 degrees outside, walking around, maybe even in the shade... but if you dig 3 feet deep, and bury a cooler of food... Earth is a natural fridge, just waiting for you to put the goodies in. It can be 45 degrees there year round!!! even in the desert or swamp.
Yeah it takes a lot of work to bury that fridge, so... it's not something you want to dig and then cover up again daily... but... you can PLAN long term storage.
That's more than cold enough for long term storage of properly prepared meat and veggies. Makes Nov-Mar a lot more hospitable if there's food just ready to be eaten if you prepare and store it first. And this is free! except some sweat.
You pay for everything, I learned that a long time ago. Even when it's free, you pay, and when your girl says I want, you pay, and when gunny says "you just volunteered" you pay... o.0
