Over the many long years I have been around, conservative Republicans have always been the law and order folks. Democrats have long been mocked for being "soft on crime." Regarding laws which are hard on firearms owners we have Newt Gingritch and the GOP majority; these conservatives passed a law whereby a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction means that you can never own a firearm.
