Re: More on crimping
All Model 99 Savages had rotary magazines until the guns made in the 1990's, I believe. A 1909 version most certainly has a rotary magazine. The later version (post 1990's) had a regular magazines like every other gun out there. Savage made a mistake in doing away with the rotary magazine. That rotary magazine was the feature Bill Ruger stole for his 10/22.
The Model 99 is one of the best kept secrets in gundom. They are very accurate, rugged, well made guns superb for hunting. The rotary mag has a number that appears on the the side of the gun telling you what remains in the mag. The ballistics of 300 Savage nearly match 308.
Mine is from the 1950's. I bought it for a song off the original owner's son, a co-worker, after the father died. In developing loads for it with a chronograph, not taking too much effort to aim accurately, the accuracy astounded me for a lever operated gun. I think in general it beats out a Winchester 94 for accuracy. It most certainly is a unique gun with a modern look for the age of the design and 300 Savage is a very good round indeed.
I can not take it to the range without an inquiry about it and an offer to buy it. And it is NOT for sale!!!
