Re: WAR MEMORIAL MARKS MONTEVIDEO MARU TRAGEDY
Its a sad chapter , , like our own bombers bombing trains with POW's , our own guys , but we never knew until after the war ended ..
And the US has never really been good officially at saying oops with friendly fire stuff ..
been there myself eh ..
but the Sub crew did get together and write everyone they could from the families of those lost , some are in the war memorial in canberra
some in a book called "letters" letters home from soldiers POW's and letter's from commanding officers and mates home explaining a loss of someone , theres four or fives from the sub crew to the blokes families ..
its one of those things that has been very unofficial but those who know hold no grudge , a lot because of those letters ..
so regardless of the feeling about governments , folks here know the folks there care
and as Bullet murphy said , they may have been saved from a even worse fate , being worked and starved to death building something for the emperor... he was a POW for 3 years until escaping in a pile of corpses and made it all the way the the lines in PNG
90% of our jap held POW's never made it home ..
